LL.D.
Eligibility for Admission
An applicant seeking admission to LL.D. Degree Programme must have:
- An M. Phil. Degree in Law from NUJS or from any other recognized University OR
- An LLM. Degree of a recognized University and having served as a full-time teacher in law for a minimum period of ten years in a Department of Law in a University/College/ Institution of national importance OR
- A Ph.D. Degree in a law-related subject with an LLM. Degree from a recognized University.
Admission Procedure
When notified, eligible candidates, desirous of seeking admission to LL.D. Programme shall apply to the Registrar in the prescribed Form which can be obtained after paying an Application Fee of Rs. 300/- by Demand Draft drawn on any Nationalized Bank payable to National University of Juridical Sciences at Kolkata and submit the same duly filled, within the stipulated date.
While applying, the candidate shall furnish the following:
- An outline of the scheme of research intended for the thesis
- A suggested chapter-wise resume of the work outline in about 2,000 words
- Attested Xerox copies of LL.M. M.Phil. and M.A. Degrees, whichever are applicable, along with the mark sheets
- One set of published papers, monographs, articles and books if any
Selection for 'registration' to the LL.D. Programme shall be based, inter alia, on the performance of the candidate at a written test and/or interview conducted by the Admission Committee constituted for this purpose with two or more Faculty members of the University nominated by the Vice-Chancellor. The test is intended to appraise the candidate's own understanding of the project he/she is proposing to undertake and the applicability of legal issues involved in the research.
After going through the Admission Test and/or interview, if the Admission "Committee finds a candidate suitable for pursuing LL.D., Degree programme, he shall be allowed to provisionally 'register' for the LL.D. Programme on payment of Rs. 1000/- as registration fee.
Advisory Committee
On completion of the registration formalities, the Vice-Chancellor shall constitute an Advisory Committee, with a Principal Guide and two others from the senior faculty, for every registered candidate. One or more outside experts may also be appointed as members of the Advisory Committee, if felt necessary. One of these faculty members, having specialization in the area of research, selected by the candidate shall be the Principal Advisor and shall be the Chairman of the Advisory Committee..
The Advisory Committee may review the research scheme submitted by the student and make additions/ alterations or change the nature and scope of the problem, in consultation with the student concerned. It shall also prepare a plan of work for the entire programme, stipulating the teaching assignments, the number of seminars to be conducted by the student, review of literature and any other academic activity that the student should get himself involved in. The plan of work and the nature/scope of the research problem developed by the Advisory Committee shall be subjected to the approval of the Vice-Chancellor who is empowered to make any additions or alterations therein.
On completion of not less than six months' residence in the University, after the date of registration, and a substantial coverage of review of literature on his/her research problem, the student shall undergo a comprehensive evaluation conducted by his/her Advisory Committee, in order to determine his suitability for being admitted to the candidacy of LL.D. Degree Programme at the NUJS. On receipt of the report of the Advisory Committee, the Registrar, with the approval of the Vice - Chancellor, shall notify that the student concerned be admitted to the programme of LL.D.
Residential Requirement
The minimum term of residence for completion of the requirements of the LL.D. Degree Programme and submission of the thesis, is two years from the date of final registration. The Vice - Chancellor, on the recommendation of the Advisory Committee, if satisfied, may permit a student to stay outside the NUJS Campus and continue with his research work, for such duration, as may be necessary. Such a period of stay, outside the Campus, may be counted toward the two years residential requirement, for the competition of the programme..
Submission of Thesis
At least three months before the submission of his/her thesis, the student is required to present a final Seminar, wherein he/she has to present and defend the findings of his/her research work. The faculty, the post-graduate students and other invited experts shall attend the Seminar.
In the light of the discussion at the Seminar, and recommendations of the Advisory Committee, the drafting of the thesis shall be revised and then submitted to the University with the approval of the then Advisory Committee. While submitting his/her thesis in quadruplicate to the University for evaluation, the student shall comply with the following requirements:
- A Certificate from the Principal Advisor, testifying for having satisfactorily completed all the requirements of the LL.D. Programme
- A declaration by the student and attested by the Advisor, to the effect that the research work is of original nature and not published or submitted elsewhere
- Fee receipt of having paid Rs. 10,000/- as Examination Fee
Evaluation of Thesis
The Thesis submitted by the student shall be referred for evaluation, to three external Examiners, selected by the Vice- Chancellor, from a panel of External Experts, recommended by the Academic Council for this purpose. The majority opinion of examiners shall be taken into account for determining whether or not the thesis work has been cleared, in fulfilment of the requirements of the LL.D. programme. If two of the External Examiners recommend that there should be Viva-Voce, the same may be held at NUJS with one of the External Examiners and the members of the Advisory Committee participating.
