Campaign For Greener Arbitration: What Next For India?

The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata (hereinafter referred to as “WBNUJS”) in collaboration with Campaign for Greener Arbitration organized a lecture on March 02, 2024. The lecture was delivered by Mr. Abinash Barik, Co-Founder and Partner of Finvest Legal, New Delhi and the India Co-Chair of Campaign for Greener Arbitration.

The lecture aimed at discussing how introduction of greener arbitration can help in reducing the carbon footprint of international arbitrations through behavioral changes among the parties to such arbitral proceedings. The lecture also highlighted the benefits of using online dispute resolution models by leveraging videoconferencing for purposes of meetings and hearings, use of electronic bundles for sharing relevant documents and the use of electronic service of requests for arbitration and submissions.

Further, the lecture discussed the role that various stakeholders such as arbitrators, arbitral institutions, law firms, chambers and legal service providers can play in ensuring the implementation of greener arbitration. Furthermore, the lecture witnessed active participation from the students who asked and deliberated upon thought provoking issues.

The session proved to be intellectually stimulating and helped the students understand the importance of adopting such practices as budding lawyers of tomorrow.
