The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences, Kolkata expresses its heartfelt mourning and deepest condolences on NUJS' former Chancellor and ex-Chief Justice of India, Honourable Justice Altamas Kabir's sad demise on 19th February, 2017. In the passing of Justice Kabir, the University, the legal fraternity and indeed the nation have lost a great towering legal mind, who served the Indian judiciary with boundless dedication, utmost humility and unceasing commitment for nearly thirty years. We shall sorely miss his noble service, as well as his invaluable teachings on the core constitutional philosophies and human rights that underpin the evolution of Indian jurisprudence. His tenure as Honorary Professor and Chair Professor of Ford Foundation on Human Rights and Citizenship Studies in NUJS provided an invaluable opportunity of scholarly participation in the academic life of the University. His course on 'Law and the Child' has always remained a source of awe and deep respect students and the faculty at NUJS have been exceedingly fortunate to interact with a brilliant jurist, whose gentle and welcoming demeanour endeared him to all. The extended deeply personal attachment that NUJS developed over the years with Justice Kabir, has fostered its development in all aspects, whether it be in the sphere of academic excellence, infrastructural development, or even in seeking recommendation letters, which form irreplaceable mementoes in the students' repertoire. An erudite scholar and legal luminary who continually engaged in impassioned debates with faculties and students, while upholding his enduring respect for logic, Justice Kabir indeed served, and will continue to serve, as a beacon of inspiration for posterity. May his soul rest in peace, and may the Almighty impart his bereaved family members with the strength to tide over this loss.
